Meet Sabrina

Hi, my name is Sabrina. I started Bonding with Baby Inc. because I care about children and their parents.

I have always been interested in child development and parenting. For the past 18 years, I have worked with children and adults of marginalized populations, special needs, and mental health; of which the last 7 years I have been working as a Registered Nurse. I have a bachelor degree (BA) in Psychology with a focus on child development and a bachelor degree (BScN) in Nursing having preceptored in community health, both from the University of Alberta. I am Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST), certified through Child Passenger Safety Association of Canada (CPSAC).

I believe strongly in health promotion and advocating for children and parents through education. I have successfully advocated for additional nursing services in my workplace, having been the office representative for the last 4 years. I also participate in regional educational activities whenever possible with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta. I believe in providing the best quality Registered Nursing care and do so by educating and advising peers on their Standards of practice, ethics, and scope of practice. I have also preceptored nursing students in their final year of nursing education. I am a special needs advocate and host a medical and advocacy blog on Down Syndrome. My current learning activities include earning my International Board Certified Lactation Consultation (IBCLC) certification and continuing education in developing children’s early language and literacy skills.

I am a mother to four children and am able to relate a great deal of my family life to my nursing practice. I have had an epidural and forceps delivery birth, unmedicated natural birth, induced forceps delivery birth, and a caesarean section. I truly understand the childbirth and postpartum period and had my share of complications with each. I believe this enables me to be not only a sympathetic listener but an empathetic counsellor as well. One of my children had to have surgery immediately after birth and stayed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for two months after his birth. I understand firsthand what families with children in NICU go through. As such, I have given my consent for my NICU pictures to be used in the new parent NICU handbook being developed by Alberta Health Services and to be presented at an international conference for NICU doctors in Edmonton this year. I have breastfed all my children on and off for the last 9 years, and continue to breastfeed my youngest. I have experienced many breastfeeding challenges of which the hardest has been overcoming and successfully breastfeeding my low muscle tone special needs child.

I have made it my mission to enhance postpartum, early childhood, and parenting services and make it available to the public. My objective is to fill in a gap of service to parents and to advocate for postpartum and parenting services, bringing forth my varying experiences and education to help others. I have created and am the owner of Bonding with Baby Inc. Parents are asking for more support and deserve support in helping themselves and their families. Bonding with Baby seeks to help by providing the essentials of bonding with baby from birth to age 12. From the perspective of a nurse, the heart of a mom, and the passion of an advocate.
